HENRIK VIBSKOV BOUTIQUE [456 Broome Street, New York]

A muchas de las tiendas de este archivo cibernético voy "a tiro fijo"; porque he leído algo sobre ellas, las he visto en internet o alguien me las recomiendas. Pero hay otros casos, como es este, en que algo llama mi atención desde el exterior y tengo que entrar a fisgonear. Si además tengo la suerte de estar cargando con la cámara de fotos me surto de documentación gráfica sin tener que volver otro día.

To many of the shops included in this cybernetic file I go straight away; because I've read something about them, I have seen them on the internet or someone recommended them to me. But there are other cases, as this very same one, that something draws my attention from the outside and I must enter to see what's going on. If in addition I am lucky to be saddled with the camera I get tons of graphic documentation without having to come back another day.

En el caso de Henrik Vibskov Boutique fue la peculiar decoración de sus paredes lo que llamó mi atención paseando por Broome Street. Una vez entré y me contaron que el diseñador, de origen danés y antiguo alumno de Central Saint Martins, es un artista multidisciplinar y que esa es además la filosofía de la firma, todo tuvo mucho más sentido...

It was Henrik Vibskov Boutique´s peculiar walls decoration what struck me walking through Broome Street. Once I went in and they told me that the designer, of Danish origin and a former student of Central Saint Martins, is a multidisciplinary artist and that this is also the philosophy of the firm, everything made much more sense...

Yo diría que es obvio que la tienda es un espacio agradable, cuidado al detalle, pero eso no es lo que más me gusta del lugar. En este caso destacaría el hecho de que no se muy bien como definir el ambiente... En parte me parece un entorno náutico, por otro lado también tiene un aire rústico o campestre, e incluso me vienen a la mente el hockey y los palos que se utilizan para dirigir la pelota. Probablemente esto no sea intencionado, pero esta falta de claridad en el contexto es para mi lo más atractivo de esta tienda.

I would say that it is obvious that the shop is a pleasant place, care to detail, but that is not why I like about it. In this case I would highlight the fact that I find myself not able to define the environment... It partly seems a nautical environment, on the other hand it has also a rustic or countryside air, and even hockey and the sticks used to run the ball come to mind . This is probably not intentional, but this lack of clarity in the context is for me what's most attractive of this store.

FREE PEOPLE [63 Church St., Cambridge, MA]

Free People es una conocida cadena americana que surgió en Philadelphia en los años 70, teniendo como clientes habituales a jóvenes que buscaban su propia libertad a través de la ropa que llevaban.

Con el tiempo fue evolucionando, y su nombre  cambió por el de Urban Outfitters. En 2001 la casa decidió volver a sus raíces y Free People volvió a la escena, convirtiéndose en una firma más contemporánea y madura.

Lo más curioso, y por lo que he decidido resaltar esta tienda, es que tanto NY como Boston están plagadas de estos establecimientos, pero yo jamás me había dado cuenta de su existencia en la Gran Manzana. Me parece interesante el hecho de que en un determinado entorno, con muchas más tentaciones y atracciones, algo pase desapercibido pero en otra lugar diferente capte totalmente nuestro interés.

Free People is a well-known American brand that emerged  in Philadelphia in the 1970s, having as customers young people seeking their own freedom through the clothes they wore.

Over time it evolved, and its name changed to Urban Outfitters. In 2001 the House decided to return to his roots and Free People returned to the stage, becoming a more contemporary and mature firm.

The strangest thing, and so I decided to highlight this store, is that both New York and Boston are plagued of these establishments, but I had never realized about its existence in the Big Apple. What I find interesting is the fact that in a certain environment, with many more temptations and attractions, something goes unnoticed but in another different place it entirely captures our interest.

La firma tiene una estética muy clara e identificable, un estilo entre hippy y campestre. Todos sus complementos (desde perchas, a elementos decorativos o accesorios) están hechos a mano. En las tiendas puedes encontrar desde un jardín vertical, a la lámpara de casa de tu abuela o un baúl que parece traído de un mercadillo en Ibiza.

He decidido destacar este establecimiento en concreto por su precioso pavimento de listones de madera y su peculiar entrada en rampa, donde se establece una relación con el escaparate y por tanto también con el exterior. Además se encuentra en un entorno muy agradable, en el pequeño pueblo que conforma la Universidad de Harvard y sus alrededores.

The firm has a very clear and identifiable aesthetic, a style between hippy and country style. All accessories (from hangers, accessories or decorative elements) are handmade. In the stores you can find everything, from a vertical garden, a lamp like the ones your grandmother had at home or a trunk which seems to be from a flea market in Ibiza. 

I decided to highlight this establishment in particular by its beautiful pavement of  wood slats and its peculiar ramp entrance, where a relationship with the window and so with the exterior is established. In addition it is located in a very nice environment, in the small town that Harvard University and its surroundings form.

NEWBURY STREET, Boston

El pasado fin de semana pude descubrir que Boston es una ciudad acogedora, manejable y tranquila. De la misma manera lo es Newbury Street, una de sus principales calles comerciales, donde se encuentran las tiendas de las marcas más destacadas. A diferencia de la 5ª Avenida, los Campos Elíseos o la calle Ortega y Gasset, esta vía destaca por ser de pequeña escala y de carácter casi residencial, siendo los escaparates de los establecimientos como pequeños portales que se asoman para darnos la bienvenida e invitarnos a entrar.

Yo diría que consiguen el resultado esperado, pues a diferencia de lo que ocurre en otras grandes avenidas, en Newbury Street no me he sentido intimidada por un rótulo, un nombre o una marca; sino que he paseado y recorrido sus locales cómoda y relajadamente.

The past weekend I could discover that Boston is a cozy, manageable and quiet city. In the same way it is Newbury Street, one of the city's main commercial streets, where you can find the stores of leading brands. Unlike the 5th Avenue, the Champs-Elysées or Ortega y Gasset Street, this road is notable for its small, almost residential, scale, being the windows as small portals looming to welcome us and invite us to enter.

I would say that they get the expected result, because unlike what happens in other avenues, in Newbury Street not I felt intimidated by a label, a name or trademark; but I have walked and toured their premises comfortable and relaxed.
