VALLMAI [Fernando VI 8, Madrid]

Vallmai es una tienda de ropa y complementos para chicas situada en la calle Fernando VI, en un antiguo y conocido local de la movida madrileña.

El barrio es en mi opinión una de las zonas comerciales más interesantes que podemos encontrar en Madrid, donde se sitúan también otros establecimientos de los que ya hemos hablado como Do o Scotch&Soda.

Vallmai is a clothing and accessories store for girls located in Fernando VI Street, in an old and know premises of the movida madrileña.

The neighborhood is in my opinion one of the most interesting commercial areas you can find in Madrid, where other establishments that we already talked about, such as Do or Scotch&Soda, are also located.

Recientemente hicieron unos pequeños cambios en la distribución del local, pero de notable mejoría. El mostrador fue trasladado de un lateral al final de la tienda, dejando más libertad a la gente para caminar por el lugar y observar las prendas; situándolo además como un punto focal al que acudir al final de la visita.

La combinación de materiales en su diseño no es novedosa pero si un acierto seguro: madera, ladrillo visto y hierro. Estos tres elementos hacen de la tienda un lugar de aspecto rústico, romántico, acogedor,… en consonancia con la esencia de los productos que se ofrecen.

They recently made some little changes in the premises distribution, but of remarkable improvement. The desk was transferred from one side to the back of the store, leaving people more freedom to walk around the place and observe the garments; placing it as a focal point to turn at the end of the visit.

The combination of materials in its design is not new but a sure hit: wood, brick and iron. These three elements make the store a place of rustic, romantic, friendly aspect, and combines with the essence of the products offered.

Entre sus prendas: diseños nórdicos, franceses, también nacionales; con una enorme presencia de vestidos y una colección propia de bisutería, donde encontramos repetidas veces su icono (la libélula) pero nunca dos piezas iguales.

Los expositores y percheros son muy sencillos, elegantes y sobretodo muy versátiles; constantemente están cambiando de contenido, ya que si algo quiere ofrecer Vallmai es variedad.

No puedo dejar de mencionar lo asequibles que son los precios (teniendo en cuenta además que hablamos de piezas especiales) y la involucración y buen trato del personal, ya que no hay mejor merchandising que un buen recibimiento y la posterior labor del “de boca en boca”.

Among their clothing: Nordic designs, French, also national; with a huge presence of dresses and an own collection of fashion jewellery, where you'll find several times its icon (the dragonfly) but never two equal pieces.

Exhibitors and coat racks are simple, elegant and very versatile; they are constantly changing their content, since if something Vallmai wants to offer it's variety.


I must mention the affordable prices (bearing in mind also that we are talking about special pieces) and the involvement and good treatment of the staff, as there is no better merchandising that a good reception and the subsequent work of the "of Word of mouth".

Pero lo que a mi me gusta de esta tienda es sin duda la descarada revelación de su pasado como bar de copas. Podemos ver desde el rótulo exterior de KWAI, la máquina de cafés bajo el mostrador, la caja registradora antigua y, lo más atractivo, algunas zonas que conservar el pavimento original de baldosas.

Con tantos lugares interesantes en el Barrio de las Salesas, si alguien aun no lo conoce la visita es obligada. Aun queda algo de tiempo antes de que llegue el 2012!!

But what I most like about this shop is without doubt the blatant revelation of her past as a cocktail bar. We can see the outside label of KWAI, the coffee machine under the counter, the old cash register, and what’s most attractive, some areas which retain the original tiles pavement.

With so many interesting places in the neighbourhood of the Salesas, if someone still does not know it the visit is a must. There is still some time before we reach the year 2012!!

RADIO CITY [PLAZA GUARDIAS DE CORPS 1, MADRID]

Radio City es una de las mejores tiendas de discos y vinilos de Madrid, situada en el barrio de Conde Duque, frente al centro cultural del mismo nombre. Es una tienda pequeña pero muy bien aprovechada, donde la selección y la calidad priman frente al volumen de material.

Radio City is one of the best CDs shops and vinyls of in Madrid, located in the Conde Duque neighborhood, in front of the cultural center of the same name. It is a small but very well used store, where the selection and quality  take predence over the volume of material.

Cierto es que almacenar discos y vinilos no es en principio una labor complicada, pero el valor de este establecimiento es que lo hace de una manera elegante, con buen gusto y sobretodo muy organizada. Los pocos metros cuadrados del local han sido utilizados de la manera más práctica.

Encontramos los productos distribuidos por estilos y épocas en unos bonitos muebles de madera. En varias baldas de pared se exponen además aquellos que en cierto momento quieren destacarse.

It is true that store CDs and vinyls is not a complicated task, but the value of this property is doing it in an elegant manner, with good taste and highly organized. The few square metres have been used in the most practical way.

We found the products distributed by styles and eras in beautiful wooden furniture. On several wall shelves there are also those to, at some point, highlight.

La pizarra (donde se anuncian las últimas recomendaciones), los adornos del techo, sus taburetes y los montoncitos de vinilos inteligentemente distribuidos por el lugar, le dan cierto aire infantil o colegial; haciendo el espacio más acogedor y tranquilo.

A blackboard (where the latest recommendations are announced), roof ornaments, their stools and the groups of vinyls intelligently distributed through the site, give it some child or school air; making the space more friendly and quiet.

Entre su oferta se encuentran grandes novedades y reediciones (muchas de sus piezas no se encontrarán en otros establecimientos) acompañadas de un trato cuidado y servicial.

Os recomiendo dar un paseo por las calles del barrio Conde Duque donde existe una enorme oferta comercial, entre la que se encuentra esta tienda tan interesante.

Among its offerings are great innovations and reissues (many of his pieces will not be found in other establishments) accompanied by a careful and helpful treatment.

DO [Fernando VI 13, Madrid]

Cuando decidí abrir este blog, prácticamente a la vez que Do abría sus puertas, muchos fueron los amigos que me hablaron de la nueva tienda que acababa de aparecer en Fernando VI. Una vez la visité, no me decepcionó en absoluto y desde entonces ya he estado por allí varias veces; porque, como ellos mismos explican, a Do no solo se va a comprar, uno puede ir allí a dar un paseo, tomar un café o contemplar las obras expuestas en sus paredes.

When I decided to start this blog, practically at the same time as Do opened its doors, lots of friends told me about the new store that just appeared in Fernando VI. Once I visited it, it did not disappoint me at all and since then I have been there several times; because, as they themselves explain, Do is not only a place to buy stuff, one can visit it to walk around, to have coffee or to contemplate the work exhibited in its walls.

Al hacer un poco de research sobre este nuevo establecimiento, he descubierto que muchos se refieren a él como “tienda concepto” (establecimientos especializados en UN producto y que con su diseño superan los límites a los que nos tienen acostumbrados). Yo creo que más bien deberíamos hablar de un nuevo concepto de tienda, novedoso en Madrid pero que ya existe fuera de nuestro país, siendo su ejemplo más conocido la tienda Merci, en París.

Do es un espacio vivo, cambiante, no dedicado a un único producto sino a reflejar una visión de trabajo, una filosofía de vida, una estética. En la propia tienda nos lo explican: en Do hay moda, decoración de hogar, arte, café, revistas y artículos de papelería.

When doing a little research on this new establishment, I discovered that many people talk about it as a “concept store” (establishments specialized in a product and that with their design they pass the limits to which we are used to). I believe we would rather talk about a new concept of store, new in Madrid but that already exists outside our country, being its most known example the Merci store, in Paris.

Do is an alive, changing space, not dedicated to an unique product but to reflect a work vision, a life philosophy, an aesthetic. In the store they explain it to us: in Do there is fashion, home decoration, art, coffee, magazines and articles of stationery stores.

La madera es la parte central del diseño, pero el lugar nos enseña también paredes de ladrillo, zócalos de pierda, tubos de instalaciones, vigas vistas, columnas de acero, y una selección de objetos y muebles tanto rústicos como minimalistas.

Un estilo que recuerda al elegante diseño nórdico; resuelto y combinado de manera perfecta, ya que a pesar de la mezcla de tantos elementos  no resulta para nada recargado.

Wood is the central part of the design, but the place has also brick walls, stone baseboards, facilities tubes, seen beams, steel columns, and a selection of objects and furniture both rustic and minimalist.

A style that reminds the elegant Nordic design; solved and combined in a perfect way, since in spite of the mixture of so many elements it is not for anything overelaborated.

La ropa se muestra en originales y sutiles percheros, para no interrumpir o dificultar la visión de las obras de arte que se exponen simultáneamente en las paredes.

Estanterías, percheros, alacenas, mesas,… Las numerosas formas de enseñar los productos (algunas de ellas son productos a la venta en sí mismas) se van intercalando para que vayamos descubriendo poco a poco todo lo que Do nos ofrece; si primero examinábamos distintas prendas de ropa, al dar un par de pasos podemos encontrarnos contemplando una vajilla.

Clothes are shown in original and subtle hangers, to not interrupt or to make the vision of the art works exposed simultaneously in the walls difficult.

Bookcases, hangers, cupboards, tables,… The different forms to show the products (some of them are themselves products on sale) are inserted so that we discover everything Do offers little by little what; if first we examined clothes, after a couple of steps we can be contemplating a set of dishes.

Los probadores, situados al fondo, son como dos casetas típicas de playa. Otro ejemplo más de cómo introducir y combinar elementos de diseño completamente diferentes sin romper la estética común del lugar.

Dar un paseo por Do es una experiencia diferente, en la que disfrutar observando el lugar, su mobiliario y las obras de los diseñadores y artistas emergentes por los que apuesta la nueva tienda de moda del barrio de las Salesas.

The fitting rooms, located at the back, are like two typical beach houses. Another example of how to introduce and combine completely different elements of design without breaking the common aesthetic of the place.

Walking around Do is a different experience, in which to enjoy the place itself, its furniture and the work of emergent designers and for which the new hot spot of the Salesas district bets.

CHAOTIC ARCHITUDE: El Rastro, Madrid

Cuando vienen mis padres a Madrid a veces nos da por hacer planes “diferentes”. Diferentes, pero no innovadores ni originales, ya que al llegar a alguno de esos destinos solemos descubrir que el resto de provincianos que han venido de puente a la capital han tenido exactamente la misma idea…

Uno de esos planes es dar una vuelta por El Rastro. Nuestras visitas al conocido mercadillo son de todo tipo… A veces productivas, y salimos de allí con alguna máquina de escribir antigua con la que aumentar la colección del cabeza de familia; y en otras ocasiones, como esta última, son desesperantes, pues no somos conocidos por nuestra paciencia ni nuestro amor por las multitudes…

En cualquier caso, a mi siempre me gusta ir por ver la enorme cantidad de cosas curiosas, baratijas y porquerías que hay; y sobretodo, por dar una vuelta por los anticuarios y ver algunas de mis debilidades, como las sillas o maletas antiguas.

When my parents come to Madrid sometimes we decide to make plans that are “different” somehow. Different, but non innovating nor original, since when arriving at some of those destinies we usually discover that the rest of provincials who have come to the capital for the holiday have had the same exact idea …

One of those plans is to visit El Rastro street market. Our visits to this well-known market are of all type… Sometimes productive, and we left with another old typewriter with which increase my father’s collection; and in other cases, like this last one, they are exasperating, because we are not known by our patience nor our love by the multitudes…

In any case, I always like to see the enormous amount of peculiar things, trinkets and trashy stuff that are there; and overall, to visit the antique dealers and to see some of my weaknesses, like old chairs or suitcases.

Patch [Blanca de Navarra 3, Madrid]

Patch es una tienda de moda masculina situada en una tranquila calle del barrio de Chamberí, con la que se pretende introducir en el panorama madrileño el concepto casualwear americano, frente a las numerosas ofertas de moda inglesa o italiana que pueden encontrar los hombres en la capital a la hora de equipar sus vestidores.

Su sencillo escaparate muestra, a través de unos maniquís, dos posibilidades de entre las muchas combinaciones que se podrían hacer con las prendas que se verán a continuación en el interior.

Patch is a men fashion store located in a calm street of Chamberí district, with which the owners tried to introduce in Madrid`s scene the American casualwear concept, against the numerous English or Italian fashion offers that men can find in the capital at the time of equipping their wardrobes.

Its simple shop-window shows, through a couple of mannequins, two possibilities among the many combinations that could be done with the articles that will be seen next inside.

La tienda y las prendas que ofrece comparten un estilo común, basado en la sencillez y la elegancia. En ella se puede encontrar todo lo necesario para equiparse e cara a una nueva temporada, desde camisas, a pantalones, americanas, calcetines, gorros,… Todo ello de gran calidad, dando especial atención a los colores y tejidos.

The store and the articles share a common style, based on simplicity and elegance. Everything one may need to equip himself for a new season can be found in the store, from shirts, to trousers, jackets, socks, caps,… All this of great quality, giving special attention to the colors and weaves.

El local sigue una organización circular, presentando los productos en una mesa central y de diversas maneras (la ya tan mencionada e importante “variación de ritmos”) alrededor de ella. Un esquema claro y fácil de seguir que te permite visualizarlo todo y encontrar fácilmente lo que buscas.

The premises follow a circular organization, presenting the products in a central table and in different ways (already so mentioned and important “variation of rates”) around her. A clear scheme, easy to follow, that allows you to visualize everything and find easily what you are looking for.

La estética general tiene un aire entre a colegio antiguo y área industrial, con percheros de tipo colegial, mesas y estanterías de líneas sencillas en acero y una recopilación de muebles de antaño. Los acabados son también muy básicos: un bonito suelo de madera oscura y paredes pintadas de blanco intercalando algunas zonas con azulejos; una combinación sutil y perfecta para que el protagonismo recaiga en la explosión de color del producto que se está ofreciendo.

Las prendas se distribuyen en distintos grupos o zonas, y en todos ellos se ha tenido en cuenta la denominada adyacencia de artículos, tratando de guiar al cliente aproximando los productos que tienen empatía entre sí (de manera que quizás acabe comprando algo que de antemano no era lo que venía buscando): pantalones junto a camisas, bufandas junto a los jerseys, americanas con más camisas,…

Varios espejos situados por las distintas paredes amplían además el campo de visión y hacen que el espacio esté desahogado a pesar de al gran cantidad de productos que recoge en su interior.

The general aesthetic has an air between old school and industrial area, with schoolboy-type hangers, tables and bookcases of simple lines in steel and a compilation of old days furniture. The finishes are also very basic: a beautiful dark wood floor and white walls with some tiles areas; a subtle and perfect combination so that protagonism falls to the explosion of color of the products that are offered.

The articles are distributed in different groups or zones, and in all of them the “articles adjacency” has been considered, trying to guide the client approximating the products that have empathy to each other (so that he ends up buying something that beforehand was not what he came looking for): trousers next to shirts, scarfs next to the jerseys, jackets with more shirts,…

Several mirrors located by the different walls extend the field of vision and cause that the space is relieved in spite of the great amount of products that gathers in its interior.

Además de sus sencillos expositores la tienda está llena de curiosos detalles que hacen la visita más entretenida y divertida.

Los probadores, situados en la esquina opuesta a la entrada, son también un elemento simple pero muy cuidado. A mi personalmente me encanta el hecho de que sus espejos se unan con otro que hay en la pared contigua, de manera que cuando están abiertos se convierten en algo muy liviano y se pierde la distinción de dentro-fuera.

Merece la pena visitar Patch (incluso si eres chica!) pues además de disfrutar del agradable espacio que se ha creado, es sumamente entretenido observar y analizar la gran oferta de tejidos y colores que se exponen allí.

Besides its simple exhibitors the store is full of peculiar details that make the visit more entertaining and fun.

The fitting rooms, located in the opposed corner to the entrance, are also a simple element but very taken care of. I personally like the fact that their mirrors are continuation of the one in the contiguous wall, so that when they are open they become something very light and the distinction of in-and-out is lost.

It is worth the trouble to visit Patch (even if you are a woman!) since besides enjoying the pleasant space that has been created, it is extremely enjoyable to see and to analyze the great amount of weaves and colors that are exposed there.
